Awesome 2012 Retro Mustang GT

Here’s yet another reason why you should go to SEMA this year. It’s a bit too far away for myself to visit the event, but I would at least want to see this Mustang up close.

John Heermann – 23 years old – created this ‘68 styled Mustang GT from a new 2012 Mustang. And it looks just great. Ford should take a look at this and let this Mustang inspire them for their new yet to be designed Mustang model. Seriously!

Here’s how he did it:

“The Retro Stang features ‘68 and ‘69 Mustang sheetmetal hand grafted into the nose, tail and rear quarter panels of the 2012 Mustang GT body.  The hood has been lengthened 14-inches and the rocker panels custom made. The headlight doors and rear fender caps were hand built from scratch by Heermann.  Another feature you might notice is the raised back glass to give it the angle for the fastback look.”

Awesome John!

When a car configurator becomes a stage

Awesome. Normally I don’t tend to write much about Mustangs that aren’t like 40 years old but this is one of these exceptions. It’s when the Mustang enthusiast as well as the Marketer in me get excited that I make that kind of exception on this blog. And that’s exactly what Ford did with their new customizer for the 2012 Ford Mustang.

First of all it is by far the best car configurator that I’ve seen, the battle mode makes it even more interesting. And yes I realize it’s not really a car configurator in the typical sense of the word, you cannot change some options you would normally want to change in a configurator like that (interior, options, …) but I don’t really mind. It’s exactly those things that make me walk away from those tools in the first place. In this case I get to play with the different models – quite literally – and from that point go to the ‘build & price’ options, the more boring stuff, albeit not unimportant of course.

2012customize

And what a stunning quality as well. The image you see above is my first custom Mustang, my color, my everything… don’t you think that is looking really good? Looks pretty real to me.

And then there’s the staging area. Once you’ve built a custom Mustang (or more than one) you can challenge other fans & friends in one-to-one battles.

And maybe bring you some inspiration. Nice work Ford! I’m gonna build me some more truly awesome ‘Stangs. Challenge me, you know where to find me ;)

#22: 1969 Mustang. Homemade. From paper!

brand-1

How awesome is this?! This Brooklyn artist is making an entire 1969 Mustang from scratch… from paper:

In his latest work One Piece at a Time, Brooklyn artist Jonathan Brand has constructed every single part of a 1969 Mustang coupe at 1:1 scale out of nothing but paper. Using digital drawings as a source, he printed the blueprints with a large-format inkjet printer. The components were then meticulously cut out and folded into a wide range of objects including spark plugs, nuts and bolts, a radiator, and even the individual tire treads. The final work will not be assembled into an entire vehicle, but rather displayed as loose miniature sculptures.

Thinking back about the reason that I initially started this blog, this is a good one for the series of posts I wrote about ‘the quest’. Not sure if I have the patience for this though. But just look at this stuff, how cool is that, seriously. I gotta go see this!

Shelby Limited Edition Cruiser Bike

Let it to Shelby do do awesome things with anything on wheels. Although we usually think of Shelby as creator of awesome car modifications, this time they teamed up with Felt Bikes to do something similar with your regular bicycle.

“This limited edition cruiser bicycle will be individually badged and serial numbered bikes are finished in Wimbledon White with the Guardsman Blue paint scheme that’s so reminiscent of the vintage Shelby cars. The bike boasts Felt’s hydro-formed aluminum tank frame, three-speed Shimano Nexus internal gearing and 36-spoke wheels.”

Awesome don’t you think? Hat tip to Cameron for discovering the news, and yeah I want one as well. He also has got loads more pictures of the bike so go check it out. It doesn’t come cheap but in comparison to any other good bike the price is definitely about right.

GM’s original 1956 four seat sports car proposal

"Let’s revert to the slab stern and high luggage compartment, the nearly vertical rear window, the leather strap and ‘chunk of road machinery’ feeling."

gm_doc

That’s from a multipage document describing the need for an American four-passenger sports car, a text leading to one of the most successful product launches Detroit ever enjoyed, Ford’s April 1964 Mustang. Written in 1956, it was presented to — and furiously rejected by — Harley J. Earl, General Motors’ styling chief. Its author, Barney Clark, wrote Corvette advertising copy at the time. A few years later, working for J. Walter Thompson on the Ford account, he talked with product planner Don Frey about it. Lee Iacocca may be the "father of the Mustang," but he got the notion via Frey and Clark, and thus indirectly from GM. Even the final 108-inch wheelbase was first determined by GM’s Anatole Lapine, who subsequently became Porsche’s design leader. Nothing’s simple in the car-design business.

Jalopnik ‘Forza Motorsport’ GT500KR

Jalopnik had their own branded Mustang built in Forza Motorsport 3 – the 1968 Ford Shelby Mustang Jalopnik Forza Motorsport GT500KR – as it’s named. Could have been a shorter name right?

Anyway, here it is.

If you play Forza Motorsport, you’ll have to figure out for yourself how to get this one, but it sure looks worth finding out.

Bullitt canvas art

Carposters are cool in a boys bedroom, but when you get older you might want things to look a bit more artistic. That’s exactly what the Drivr team thought when they tipped us of this automotive canvas art. And yes, there’s Mustang in there ;)

decoart

Wouldn’t you want this 4 panel painting in your living room? I know I would. You can have it in several sizes. There are other Bullitt related paintings as well in case you’d like the idea but look for another image. It looks like they ship pretty much everywhere. I’m interested.

No glory…

Last week I bought myself a Mustang gift for Xmas. Not the car unfortunately but the t-shirt :). I found this vintage Mustang t-shirt on Amazon and instantly knew I had to have it, and even with a shipping cost that rises above the cost of the actual product I bought it. All good until yesterday when I received an email from Amazon that Old Glory (who is actually selling the t-shirt) ran out of stock and that they had to cancel my order. Bummer! I still want it bad though so if one of you find Mustang friends know where I can get my hands on this… please let me know.

PS: I’m going to New York in a couple of weeks so in case it can only be shipped within the US I should still be able to get it.

Camustenger

In a new series of blogposts that I’m preparing I wanted to expand the focus of this blog to all classic muscle cars, and for once not just the Mustang. And although I’m not ready yet with those posts, the news about the Camustenger seemed like the perfect way to announce this new series. Why? Because it really is the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger mixed up. Not bad even :)

camustenger

It is just a model but still worth checking out. You can find more information about this Camustenger right here.

Ford Mustang Gran Turismo

At the Gran Turismo Awards at this year’s SEMA, this 1970’s Ford Mustang “Trans-Cammer” took home the award. And what does that mean exactly? Well that means it’ll get the digital treatment to feature in the 5th edition of the Gran Turismo game… so you’ll be able to drive it, quite literally (albeit still virtually) :)

transcammer

Game on!
